UCLan Storm came crashing down to earth after a heavy defeat 60-12 to the impressive Leeds Met in the National Cup quarter-finals.
After their victory against Edinburgh-based Napier two weeks ago, the Storm were crowned the Northern Champions. This time they travelled to Leeds the under-dogs, but were hoping to cause a huge upset against the competition favourites.
Captain Tom Atherton was once again on the score sheet, scoring both of the tries for UCLan.
UCLan were completely outclassed in the first half as Leeds Met dominated, running in four tries against a defence that had been solid all season.
But led by their captain, the Storm made a comeback with two early tries in the second half that made Leeds take note. Atherton first try was a brilliant solo event, breaking through the defensive line at pace before handing off the full-back to cross the line.
Soon after, half-back Ryan Cosgrove managed to wriggle out of two tackles to break free and an unselfish pass to the supporting Atherton meant UCLan had dragged the score back to 22-12. But they still had a lot to do, and in the end too much, as forcing the play created more space, which also brought more Leeds tries.
The final score line did flatter Leeds, who knew they had been in a tough game.
Atherton was pleased with what the side had achieved in this record-breaking season, which has also seen the side rise into the Northern Premier division:
“It was a hard game for us against a tough Leeds side, and they were probably a level above us.
“But their captain came up to me at the end of the game and said ’you’re the best we’ve played this season’, and for him to say that shows the improvement we have made this year.
“It’s been a fantastic team effort this season. We can look forward to a tough season next year in a better division, but I am hopeful we can be just as successful.”
