UCLan’s Drama society have taken part in a sponsored walk in Blackpool to ‘save the day’ for their theatre company.
Dressed as superheroes and accompanied by their faithful companion, six of its members walked the four mile promenade, starting from The Pleasure Beach by the passage of terror and finishing at North Pier.
The society is trying to raise £1000 to send its’ professional theatre company, Crumpet Theatre Company, to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Every year since 1988 the society annually goes to the festival, which is the largest Performing Arts Festival in the World.
Shakara Ahad, 19, Crumpet Director, hopes to promote the Drama Society beyond the Preston boundaries.
She said: “We want to continue attending the Fringe Festival because it is a great opportunity to individual students and will make them so much more employable in the Arts industry and also because we are the only society that represents UClan on a global and international scale.
“Me personally, I never knew if I wanted to be a director but I got to UClan, put on a play and suddenly I found a career that I loved so much I even walked through Blackpool dressed as bat-girl.”
Other students taking part were Rory Critchley, 22, Chairperson of the Drama Society, Sammi Woollard, 20, Secretary of society, Danni Skerritt, 23, Crumpet Stage Manager, Pamela Evans, 19, Crumpet actor and Luke Murray, 23, a postgraduate and associated member.
The walk took two hours to complete and raised £150. Recent plays organised have raised £300.
Shakara added: “I think it went well but it would have been better if more people had been involved. We still had fun and raised a good amount though so we’re all happy.”
Further fundraising events include a gig and an open rehearsal to a taster of the play in which they will perform. A donation of £3 will go towards sending the theatre company to Edinburgh.
A small percentage of each event is also donated to the British Guide Dog Association.
Emma Cresswell-Maynard, UClan’s SU Equal Opportunities Officer, wishes the society the best of luck.
She said: “I think that the sponsored walk shows commitment and determination to their cause. It is really great that the society are being very proactive in raising funds, so that they can go and represent UCLan Students’ Union in Edinburgh. We will support them all the way as best we can. Keep up the good work.”
