Fat prisoner was “not provided with enough food”

Posted on 28 April 2008 by Ben Hobson

A 29-stone prisoner who lost seven-and-a-half stones whilst behind bars has filed a lawsuit against the jail.

Broderick Lloyd Laswell filed a prisoner civil rights lawsuit in Fayetteville, Arkansas against Benton County Jail, claiming that he was not provided with enough food.

When he entered prison eight months ago, he weighed 413 pounds. He is now 308 pounds (22 stone).

Laswell complained that “On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out. About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again.”

Prison Capt. Hunter Petray said that each prisoner is provided with meals averaging 3,000 calories a day.

Laswell said: “The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally are being starved to death.”
