Library set for summer makeover

Posted on 28 April 2008 by Dejla Kadhim

The library will be having a makeover throughout the summer.

The new Learning and Information Services has taken feedback from the Student Satisfaction Surveys and focus groups and found that students would like changes in the library.

Craig Hickson, Head of the Business Support Centre LIS, said: “People want to study and learn in different ways and that’s what it’s all about, making sure that we meet the different requirements for all the different people, but at the moment the library doesn’t enable us to do that.”

Changes include creating different kinds of spaces, such as silent study areas and quiet study zones, but to make them more effective then they currently are.

A walk-in restricted loan area is also being designed to enable students to access core text books for many courses. In this area students will be able to look at books and copy the pages they need, rather than taking them on loan, allowing all students to have equal access to them

A café will also be introduced, allowing people to drink, eat and use their mobile phones.

The ground floor will create a new open space providing a more adequate space for group work.

Michael Ahern, Director of Information Systems Services, said: “We’ve got this very difficult job in a short period of time, but it’s all about what students have told us they want to do, so we’re very keen to do it as quickly as we can. We’re really confident that all the areas, the silent study, the zones, will be absolutely very, very popular.”
