UCLan’s students are some of the happiest in the Northwest, according to a recent survey.

The Student Satisfaction survey results show 83 per cent of students were satisfied with the overall experience at UCLan.

This is a one per cent rise from the previous year and the fourth successive year that it has risen.

Gavin Jones, President of UCLan’s SU, said: “These figures clearly indicate the quality of our University and the constant progression in the improved areas is extremely positive”, he said.

The figures published, by the National Student Survey (NSS), have placed UCLan 5th in the Northwest and joint 9th out of the 33 modern universities formed in 1992.

Overall, the university is placed joint 74th across the UK.

UCLan’s Sports Science course scored the highest, rated number one in the UK.

This was followed by Tourism, Transport and Travel which was joint number one.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Education, Forensic and Archaeological Science, all rated in the national top five courses.

All the results were obtained from various categories being graded on satisfaction.

These included the teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources and personal development.

When rating the teaching, 87 per cent of students agreed that lecturers were good at explaining things while 82 per cent agreed that staff were enthusiastic about what they were teaching.

Students agreed 87 per cent that they had accessibility to general IT resources when needed. The University’s library resources and services were also rated, with 80 per cent of students agreeing that they were ideal for their needs.

Gavin Jones added: “This is a fantastic result for UCLan and especially for students on the courses that now have the highest satisfaction rankings in the country. Many courses have seen significant gains in student satisfaction and this is great news for students.”

Jamie Taylor, course leader of Sports Science said he has chuffed to bits with the results. He said: “I think this is a reward for all the hard work of the staff. One of the reasons that it could have improved so much is that all aspects of the course have come together in a unified centre. In the past the three-prongs that are involved in Sports Science worked in different departments, but now that we are together, we can offer students more cohesive teaching. We’ve got a really great set of staff here and it’s just rewards.”
