Badminton 1sts lose out in unlucky defeat

Posted on 31 October 2008 by David Stubbings

The Badminton Men’s 1st team suffered another close defeat at the hands of Liverpool University.

The best performance from the team came from the pairing of Alex Byrne and Daniel Roberts, winning both of their matches. The highlight of their first match was a 9 point winning streak propelling them from a 7-13 deficit into a 16-13 lead.

The other victory for UCLan came from the partnership of Geoff Carter and Martin Southgate. Despite losing their first match they came back to win their second in straight games, even with Martin suffering from a stomach bug.

“I didn’t want to move,” he said afterwards. “I wasn’t concentrating on the game all the time. Just pleased to get through two games. We were wondering whether we should put Graham (Hollingsworth) in instead of me.”

Unfortunately the singles were unable to repeat the success of the doubles team. Kevin Liu lost his two matches and Chris Dillon, replacing the injured Craig Jones, also lost to both of his opponents.

After the game Chris said: “It’s a big step up coming into the first team. By the end I was knackered and my head went.”

Captain Geoff Carter felt the team could have achieved a better result. “This was another game we should have drawn.”

His doubles partner Martin Southgate agreed. “It was another disappointing loss overall,” he said.

In the previous week’s fixtures both the men’s 2nds and girl’s teams won away at Liverpool Hope University. The men completed a second 8-0 whitewash while the girls bounced back from losing their opening fixture to win 7-1.
