Since the original idea of Pluto Online was thought up two years ago, the face of journalism in the digital era has changed dramatically, even in such a short period of time.
Technology is evolving at great speed, and its continuing popularity means everybody within the media is looking for the ideal business model to ensure taking journalism online is viable from a business point of view.
Fortunately, we don’t have that problem at Pluto Online, but it has been difficult, even for us, to get the concept off the ground, something we hope to put right this year and in the future.
Online brings a 24 hour news cycle, a permanent deadline, and an increased demand for content. This is a different situation to what student journalists have previously known with the newspaper. It’s not just one issue every fortnight. It’s a website that needs to be continually updated, something which has proved difficult in the past. It’s something that we hope to put right.
We are looking at combining the content provided by the newspaper, by PS TV and by Frequency 1350 to provide you with the ideal online student media website. We will of course be generating exclusive online content too; such is the beauty of the infinite internet.
The new site layout and design enables you to comment on every story we post up, as well as use the links at the footer of every story to share on social bookmarking and networking sites such as Facebook, Digg It and Delicious. Widgets, such as the tag cloud on the right, enable you to search through all stories on the site, covering particular topics. You can also search by date.
We have a dedicated online team for the running of the website, but we are always looking for contributors. If you want to get involved, please get involved.
So explore the site, get involved and spread the word.
