Students protest against Ugandan policies

Posted on 17 October 2008 by Richard Horsfall

There was an organised protest in Trafalgar Square this week in an attempt to increase the awareness of human rights in Uganda.

The protests on 9th October were focussed mainly on how it is still illegal to be gay in Uganda, with life imprisonment a possible sentence for offenders who are caught.

It is widely believed that the main reason for poor human rights is because of political pressure from the government.

Security forces in Uganda are known for torture tactics and using methods such as beatings, death threats and blind-folding to remove the threat of Aids/HIV activists and other opposition groups.

The protest in aid of human rights is not likely to have affected any change, but raising awareness is important in making the first steps of making overdue changes in Uganda.
