UCLan Men’s Hockey 2nds got their season off to an excellent start with a 5 – 2 away league win over Lancaster 2nds in an exciting game full of excellent hockey and good performances from all players from start to finish.
In the early stages of the match UCLan looked lacking in confidence, Richard Loughe was yellow carded and Dan Large gave away a penalty flick which the team was grateful to see fly over the fence when they were one goal up.
It didn’t take long for the goals to start flowing though as Tom Hughes and Tom Ward both bagged braces, and Hughes was unlucky not to get his hat trick. By far the best goal was scored by Martin Reily.
The move began with an interception by Dan Large at the edge of UCLan’s D, he shipped the ball out right and after a series of pass and go moves by Tom Davidson and Keelan Sherwani the ball was shelled across the Lancaster D to Reily who cleverly lured the keeper out before slotting home into the bottom right hand corner.
The defence had a good game, marking up well throughout. Standing out from the rest however was Daniel Austin who simply refused to be beaten in a man of the match performance. Keelan Sherwani also played a wonderful match, easily outpacing defenders as he stormed down the right hand side.
After the final whistle Captain Nick Richards said “Today was a good starting point for the team to build upon for what should be a very successful season. The Team played very well with a standout performance from Daniel Austin at the back.”
