A new beginning…

Posted on 04 November 2008 by Nafisa Sayani

The wait is finally over. Pluto-Online is back, freshly re-launched for the new academic year.

We at Pluto-Online aim to circulate relevant and breaking news stories to the UCLan population, through what is fast-becoming one of the most popular mediums of the developed world. This year, we’re hoping to meet this target, and in addition, extend our reach further.

Since the website’s creation, I’ve had the privilege to observe and aid the growth of this exciting project and seen it develop dramatically in the past two years. As a counterpart to the Students’ Union newspaper, Pluto-Online allows you to view all the content from Pluto and PR1, along with exclusive news, features and analysis. The new site also boasts the latest video feeds from PS-TV and audio from Frequency, providing more platforms for you to access content. Users now have more opportunities to interact, by commenting on stories and sharing links from social networking sites.

In theory, it all sounds great, but one of the biggest problems we had with the website in the past was sustaining a flow of new content, with a permanent deadline. That’s why we’re now looking to recruit a team of students to produce regular content, and this means you can get involved!

There will be a meeting at 3pm this Wednesday (5 Nov) in the Atrium for all those who want to get involved for producing content, including news, features, sport, entertainment, blogs or comment pieces. This means coming up with pictures, audio and video content, as well as writing articles. We’ll explain exactly what the site and our team is about and hopefully give you a better idea of what working on Pluto-Online entails.

At a time when technological advances mean that an increasing number of organisations are looking to publish material online, it may be useful to gain some understanding in this medium, even if you don’t anticipate pursuing online journalism as a career. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and gain some experience, as well as getting a by-line, so please come along, and ask all the questions you want!

We look forward to seeing you there!
