Foster Sports Centre has come under fire from sports clubs after several matches were re-arranged at short notice for a small leak in the roof.
The sessions were cancelled for the wellbeing of students, but due to the size of the leak, some have not been satisfied with the organisation of the centre.
Two weeks ago, a Netball firsts match, set to take place at the Centre had to be moved to Preston Sports Arena (PSA). Players from both sides had to make their own way to PSA to play the match.
One member of the Netball team, who did not wish to be named, said: “This whole situation is ridiculous. It’s a tiny hole in the roof which is leaking hardly anything and it’s not even in the way of the court, it’s on the sideline. But yet our games and practices still get cancelled. It’s bang out of order.”
She added: “Instead, they send us to Preston Sports Arena, which is even more dangerous. The courts there are really slippy as they have no grip and someone’s always falling over. A lot of people have really been hurt.”
Foster Sport Centre manager Martin Baines said: “It was terrible weather last Tuesday, like an act of God. There was a leak from the Foster Sports Hall which was dripping onto the sideline of the netball and basketball courts. We allowed volleyball to go ahead as the courts weren’t around where the leak was. We have re-arranged the netball and basketball games to December as there’s a free week then.”
“It was the first week of BUCS (British Universities and College Sport) and we really wanted to showcase it. We did everything we could to let them go ahead but we just couldn’t take a chance that someone would slip.”
