UCLan Men’s Hockey 2nd team played away at Liverpool this Wednesday, it was the biggest test of the season so far. Yet they snatched an important victory on the way to the league title.
After last weeks heartbreaking loss at the ruthless hands of Salford 1sts, Nick Richard’s team needed to wipe away their tears and put in a performance of quality and class. And that they did.
The first half was full of grit and determination, from the stubborn defence to the hardworking forwards, every player did their part. With a team lacking in offensive options, an unusual formation was used. Although this stopped the ever present opposition from penetrating the UCLan ‘D’ it also gave the visiting side little chance of scoring.
As the second half began, tactical changes were made to give this impressive UCLan side a chance of unleashing themselves on the unsuspecting Liverpool defence. After some smooth buildup play Keelan Sherwani got the lucky touch as the ball plunged into the net to give UCLan a deserved lead. As the clock ticked away it seemed that the visiting side were going to sneak a win.
Midway through the second half, the short corner team were called into action, one chance, one goal. Ed Towner with his first goal in five years celebrated with an Alan Shearer impression, much to the disgust of his team mates. This gave UCLan an unassailable lead till the end of the game.
The team will be high in spirits going into next week’s cup game. There are many positives to be taken out of the game but also composure and passing are issues that need to be addressed to have any chance of pushing for promotion this season.
Captain Nick Richards shared some thoughts after the game, “today the team played very competitive, the back four played well.”
After the game man of the match Andy Bruce commented, “I ran the game”.
