Explore Lancashire with Dotcom Walker’s Group

Posted on 26 February 2009 by Mel Mingas

Did you fail in your New Year’s resolution because you just can’t stand to be cooped up in a gym or aerobics class? Or maybe you’re new on campus and looking to explore Lancashire?

Well call off the search and put your best foot forward, because two men are on a mission to help everyone make the most of the countryside and their health.

The Dotcom Walker’s Group was founded by retired teachers Bob and John, to help them recover from bouts of ill health. Now in its third year, the group is expanding thanks to regular features in Blackpool Gazette’s Life magazine.

Bob said: “I was always a keen walker and John is quite interested in computers, so the group was a natural progression of that. We walk once a week and since we began we’ve compiled maps and pictures of 52 walks for the website, one for every week of the year.”

The website features pictures, maps and detailed directions for all the walks, so people are free to explore alone or as part of the group.

“Walking is a great way to explore the local countryside, and Lancashire has some beautiful countryside. International students in particular will find it interesting because they may well have heard about some of the landmarks we visit before they arrived.

“My favourite route on the site is the Centre of Great Britain. We go around Bowland Forest, which is the Queen’s favourite part of the country, and cover a lot of different terrain.”

The Dotcom Walker’s welcome anybody wanting to join in and all routes end at a recommended public house!

The Dotcom Walkers are also looking for students to translate their website into Chinese, Hindi, Gujurati, Bengali and Urdu. For more details see www.lancashirewalks.com
