UCLan represented at first ever LGBT event at Downing Street

Posted on 20 March 2009 by Katie Doyle

UCLan’s Campaign Officer spent a day at Downing Street getting to know some well known famous faces.

Lee Bradshaw received an invite from Number 10 to celebrate the first of its kind LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) event.

The event took place on March 5th and Lee was joined with other officers, as well as LGBT icons and politicians.

Lee said: “I was shocked when I received my invite and when I got there I realised I was one of only five student officers from around the country in attendance.”

The list of guests included the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife, Sarah, Labour MP, Harriet Harman, the Minister of State for Health, Ben Bradshaw, Comediennes; Amy Lane and Rhona Cameron and Radio 1 DJ, Scott Mills.

The event was put together to celebrate achievements that the LGBT community has achieved in recent years. It was also an event in reminding everyone that despite the recent positive legislation changed, there is still a lot to improve in social attitudes.

“I think it is important to invite LGBT campaigners because in many cases we are the first contact for many young LGBT students,” Lee said.

The LGBT is known to campaign for equality and for homophobia to be a thing of the past.
History month takes place every February and is a chance for the community to be truly heard.

With legislations in place and society changing, Lee feels that society’s attitudes are slowly catching up.

He said: “The only way we will make it happen quicker, is by dealing with homophobia in our schools and by challenging homophobia when we hear it on our day to day lives. Saying something is ‘gay’ as a word for bad is unacceptable and should be challenged.”

The event is said to have been a success and is another goal that the LGBT community have reached.

Lee said: “It was a brilliant experience and an ambition fulfilled. It was also great to be part of the first ever LGBT event held at Downing Street, that’s something I am very proud to be a part of.
