Record turnout in UCLan elections

Posted on 02 April 2009 by admin

This years student elections saw a record-breaking turnout!

It showed a 28 percent increase from last year’s figures, with 1527 students casting their votes.

This means it is the largest ever turnout in the history of UCLan’s Student Union.

It is the second year since the e-voting system was put in place. Previous figures recorded showed only a 20 percent increase.

Despite the increase in turnout, it still only reveals that 5.2 percent of the student body actually voted, out of the eligible 29,511 students studying at UCLan.

This is a slight improvement from the previous year, in which only four percent of the student population voted.

Students were sent many reminders via email to their university addresses from the university, stating when and how to vote, with no official complaints being made.

It was the President position which received the biggest number of votes cast, shortly followed by Education, Activities and Participation, Media, Campaigns and NUS Delegates. The Chair of Student Council position had the least number of votes submitted.

Keiran Bellis, UCLan’s SU Representation & Democracy Co-ordinator, said: ““It has been a really successful year regarding candidate and voting numbers. Hopefully we’ll be able to build on this next year and get even more people involved.
