Anyone can publish, starting a good looking news website can be easy

Some tips from Mindy McAdams here on how to use WordPress to create your own small-scale news website. So if you’ve ever thought about setting up your own magazine/newspaper about a certain topic, well you can online.

Digital Photography - a workflow example.

March 3rd, 2008 by Andy Squire

Found an interesting site today, documenting the digital workflow in images Sports Illustrated undertakes during a typical Superbowl. It’s a bit old (2004), so you’ll see references of 512mb cards and low-spec computers but aside from that, nothing much changes.

I found it very comforting to know that sports images for Pluto are dealt with in a very similar way (albeit scaled down a little!)

Run for media officer!

If you’re a student at UCLan, and fancy being editor of the student newspaper and website and chief executive of the student radio station - then take a look at this:media officer advert

It’s a great opportunity to learn how student media works, get hands-on experience with newspapers, online and radio. I’d recommend it to anyone. Click the image to view a larger version.

You’ll have to win an election to be it, the hardest job interview process.

The Wonderful North?

February 17th, 2008 by Ed Walker

The Wonderful North. Really cool site, built by two artists who are travelling the North of England. They stopped off in Preston. Really liking their use of video and image galleries, cool site, and the blog archive is strong with a map mash-up linking to it. Readers can also posts suggestions of where to visit.

Interesting posts for February 16, missed out on a few days of bloglines reading due to the SU referendum:

Thanks to Robin at cybersoc for this one, a nifty little website that allows you to mash feeds together and then put them on your site. The sort of skill that today’s new generation of journalism students should have… which has caused a bit of a ding-dong over with Dave Lee:

Some interesting thoughts from Dave about training online journalists, Andy Dickinson my former tutor certainly had a few words to say about it. Has caused a bit of a buzz with Mindy McAdams also looking into the topic.

UCLan’s recruitment strategy seems to be working well, the June Open Day is going to be huge. We’ll be making sure the Pluto stands are well stocked for all the prospective students to get a glimpse of what goes on around campus.

Paparazzi pics not in favour

February 13th, 2008 by Ed Walker

Holy Moly has announced it will no longer be using paparazzi images that could be seen as ‘distressing’ for celebrities. Good, with some stars checking in and out of rehab week in/week out, then it’s obvious all the media attention must be contributing their fragile mental states.

We’re going to be covering the rehab/celebs issue in the February 22nd issue of PR1.
